The Significance of Seafarer Training for New Alternative Fuels and the Need for Industry-Wide Training Overhaul

Focus on

The shift toward alternative fuels – such as ammonia, LNG, biofuels and hydrogen – is essential for reducing the carbon footprint of the maritime industry. These fuels are viewed as critical to achieving international environmental goals, such as the IMO and the Paris Agreement.

This session looks at the new challenges for seafarers.  Unlike conventional marine fuels, alternative fuels have different characteristics, handling procedures, storage requirements and safety risks that seafarers must understand to operate safely and efficiently.  This necessitates a major training overhaul.
